Whether you're looking to darken your room for better sleep or a better view of the latest blockbuster movie, room-darkening shades offer homeowners the ability to control sunlight coming into their homes to create the ideal lighting environment for their unique needs. This month, our product team at The Shade Shop is reviewing the best window treatment systems to transform Hunter Douglas window coverings into the ultimate room-darkening shades.
The Duolite® System
The Duolite® system is an innovative dual-shade system from Hunter Douglas specifically designed to expand the lighting solutions offered by different styles of window treatments. It does this by adding a secondary, room-darkening shade to the back of an existing Roman, cellular, sheer, roller, or solar shade. The back room-darkening shade works in tandem with the front, light-filtering shade to create an expansive range of interior lighting solutions.
Since using the Duolite® system doesn't affect the front-facing aesthetics of the window treatment, we like using it on shades in the living room, dining room, and front room to retain the existing style by adding additional lighting options. The Duolite® system is available on the following Hunter Douglas shades:

Layered Window Fashions
For rooms of the home where blackout darkness is of the utmost importance, such as in your home theater, where even a sliver of light can ruin the viewing experience, we like to use a system of layers to create a window fashion with unmatched light-blocking abilities. For this system, we like to use a hard, impenetrable base layer, such as blinds or shutters, under a fabric shade that can block any light leaks around the edges of the lower treatment. Depending on personal tastes, this combination might be room-darkening shutters with stylish side panels or room-darkening blinds under full, lined drapery.
The LightLock® System
Available on Duette® Cellular Shades, the LightLock® system uses u-shaped channels installed along the sides of the window frame that block any light trying to come in around the sides of the cellular shades. This room-darkening system is ideal in any bedroom, including the main suite, guest rooms, and children's rooms, to elevate the sleeping environment because, in addition to blocking light, cellular shades are also excellent at absorbing sound and insulating the room to create the trifecta of sleep-inducing elements: dark, quiet, and cool.
